They are trained to diagnose and treat diseases and health concerns. NDs are similar to medical doctors in the depth of their training, but differ in their philosophy of health care and how they work with their patients.

The training to become a Naturopathic Doctor starts with a standard university education in the sciences, and is followed by four years of medical training at approved naturopathic medical school. Naturopathic medical training covers the basic medical sciences, the functioning of the healthy body, how diseases develop, and howThe philosophy of naturopathic medicine is based upon the concepts of: “Vis medicatrix naturae”, the healing power of nature; “Tollum causum”, treat the cause; “Docere”, doctor as teacher; and “Prima non nocere”, first do no harm. The healing power of nature is our innate ability to heal, and true healing will only occur when we support the healing ability that every person has.
NDs are similar to, yet different from medical doctors, in their use of laboratory tests. Medical doctors rely upon structural laboratory tests, such as standard blood tests, ultra sound imaging, X-rays, and MRIs. While NDs use structural tests, they also use functional laboratory tests to evaluate the underlying causes of disease. Functional tests include: electro dermal screening, Biological Terrain Assessment, toxic metal testing, heart disease blood tests, and bone resorption testing.
